This Week In Android: Dec 9th – 15th

As we approach the last week before the last week before Christmas, Google has dropped an early gift in the form a bunch of new and updated Google Play edition products ensuring this festive season is a robotic one. Let’s take a look at This Week in Android!

Google’s White 32GB Nexus 7

Google has updated the higher-end of its Nexus 7 models, the 32GB variant, with a new colour option: white. The tablet is internally identical to the other current-generation Nexus 7 tablets, simply adding the option for the white black plate. As is common in Nexus devices, whichever colour you choose, the front plate will always be black.

The white Nexus 7 is already available through Google Play in the UK, the US and Japan.

The tablet is available in the WiFi-only and LTE 32GB models from Google Play in the United States, United Kingdom and Japan, with the 16GB model still only being available in black. Shipping estimates put the device’s dispatch date as 1-2 business days with free ground shipping.

LG G Pad 8.3 Google Play Edition

We’ve become used to a number of flagship phones making their way onto the Google Play store with a welcome stock Android variant, but LG is setting its sights on tablets with the release of the LG G Pad 8.3 Google Play Edition.

The LG tablet now competes for your stock Android-loving attention against Google's own Nexus 7 and Nexus 10.

The LG G Pad 8.3 Google Play Edition is an 8.3-inch tablet powered by a 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 with 2GB of RAM. The device comes with 16GB of internal storage with a microSD slot for further expansion. Of course, all this runs on stock, skin-less Android much like the other Google Play Edition devices. You can pick up your own from the Google Play Store for $349, though only in the US right now.

Sony Z Ultra Google Play Edition

Google and LG aren’t the only two companies releasing new Google Play Edition products. Sony got in on the action this week with the release of the Sony Z Ultra Google Play Edition. For $649 in the United States you can grab the device that sports a massive 6.4-inch 1080p display, 2.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm 800 processor and 16GB of internal storage. Of course, the device runs stock Android 4.4 KitKat too!
