Where’s My Water? – A Disney Puzzle Game for All Ages

I’ve never really understood how the urban legend of alligators living in sewers ever came to be, but Disney found a way to put a cute spin on it in their super-fun puzzle game Where’s My Water?

Although it features cartoonish graphics that kids will enjoy, the levels are suitable for players of all ages. And to puzzle fans who think this looks like a piece of cake, be warned – this game has bite!

Where’s My Water? takes you through several brain-teasing levels that not only require your ingenuity but also your manual dexterity: some of them can’t be completed without precise timing and careful manipulation of the level elements. The game has both free and paid versions ($0.99) for devices running Android 2.1 and up.

Concept

Swampy the Alligator is one of a kind – he enjoys keeping clean and taking showers! The other alligators don’t get this at all and mess with his plumbing so that water doesn’t reach his bathroom. Your goal is to bring water through to Swampy’s shower so he enjoy his favorite activity. The game also features Cranky, another alligator who despises Swampy for his human-like idiosyncrasy and picks on him. There’s also the lovely Allie, who develops a soft spot for Swampy.

How to Play

While this game has a central character, you don’t ever play as Swampy; you only help bring the water to his shower pipe. Set underground in the sewers, the most basic levels feature pools of water separated from Swampy’s plumbing by soil. Here you can clear a path by merely swiping your finger between the water and the pipe – but after a while it’s not quite so simple.

Levels

The game features over 200 levels, divided into chapters, including bonus levels that you can unlock, regular free updates and even levels featuring Cranky! In addition to helping Swampy with his plumbing, you’ll also find three rubber duckies in each level that you need to collect by having water flow over them. Each chapter of levels also has three collectibles hidden in the soil to unlock levels with.

Liquids

Sometimes you’ll have to guide water through soil in a carefully-drawn path so that it doesn’t spill out of the scene; other times you’ll have to avoid algae (which consumes water and blocks its passage). You may need to activate mines and gates to block water flow or let it through, or even time your clearing of soil so as to avoid having the water mix with dirty purple water or acid.

That’s right: there’s more than one kind of liquid to deal with here. The purple water can cut through algae which makes it useful for clearing passages, but sometimes it just makes the level harder. There are a few Cranky’s Challenge levels (activated by pressing the green button with a skull on select Swampy levels) which require you to clean algae off Cranky’s food with purple water too.

There’s also a green acid which eats through soil. Unless fenced off by concrete walls, this corrosive fluid will begin making its way through the level, setting the clock ticking. Sometimes you’ll have to watch how things play out and restart the level before you have a proper strategy in mind. You might also have to practice your timed moves to get things just right – which is sometimes made difficult by the prospect of collecting all three duckies.

Gameplay

WMW offers plenty of replay value as there are several things to accomplish in each chapter – “Triducking” (collecting all three duckies) unlocks special levels, while certain Achievements (such as taking eight turns to finish a level, using two fingers simultaneously to clear soil) earn you easter eggs, and of course perfect scores. The mix of puzzles and timing-dependent gameplay keeps things interesting throughout.

There are no hints to help you with levels when you’re stuck, but watch for the level title as it loads – there’s often a clue in there as to what needs to be done. My favorite levels are the ones that need to be studied carefully and set up so you can launch a complete sequence of water flows and gate openings all at once. Apart from the huge number of levels available in the paid version, you can also buy Cranky’s Story (about 80 levels) with an in-app purchase for $1.99.

Presentation

The game looks wonderful with its colorful graphics and lovely animation. It’s a joy to watch and hear Swampy as he waits for his shower as the sound effects are pretty fun too. A lot of attention has been paid to the fluid physics, which is one of the things that makes this a top-quality game. WMW’s level design is also innovative, fresh and changes things up every time you start a new one.

Conclusion

Where’s My Water? is gloriously addictive and a great way to kill time. Plus, it’s suitable for all ages, so the game can keep you and your kids occupied. There are also periodic free updates with new levels to keep the fun alive. If you’re still on the fence about buying the game, try the free version to get a taste of WMW’s unique brand of puzzle-solving action!

Summary

Where's My Water? is an addictive puzzle game where you have to help fix underwater plumbing so Swampy the alligator can indulge in his favorite pastime - taking showers!
