Eleven Ways to Replace Your Lock Screen

Are you bored of the lock screen which comes built in to your Android phone yet? The most common is the slide down screen. You have the option to change the lock screen background, but if you want to change the unlock pattern then you will need an app to do that for you. There are various such apps available in the Android Market; these are my favourites.

If customisation is your thing, check out 40+ Tips and Tricks to Get the Most Out of Android, 60 More Gorgeous Wallpapers for Your Android, and 10 Tasker Alternatives to Automate Your Android!

LockBot

LockBot

LockBot is one of the most comprehensive lock screen apps available for Android phones. The app has some amazing features to offer. However the app still needs some finishing and lacks quality at present.

In the free version you get three lock screens: iPhone, Hero and Eclair styles. The pro version has Froyo, X10 and Galaxy styles. Also in the Pro version you can access the theme gallery and choose from the various themes available there.

You can either select either one particular lock screen type or more than one style. When you select more than one style the lock screens will change each time you lock your phone. The app also allows you to edit the clock and backgrounds of each lock screen.

Overall, it is a nice app; however, it’s priced at $3.49, which is very high compared to the rates of other similar lockscreen apps.

myLock Utilities

myLock

myLock is an app that allows you to bypass the lock screen. Using this app lets you unlock the phone by only pressing the power button. Thus eliminating the need to draw patterns or slide a bar.

It is a very simple app and works perfectly.

WidgetLocker lockscreen

WidgetLocker

WidgetLocker gives you the total control of the look, feel and layout of your lock screen. You can choose the widgets and shortcuts  you to place on your lockscreen, allowing you to access them directly from it.

A unique feature of this app is the custom sliders. These sliders can be used to do a particular function like open the dialer or turn on the flashlight. This feature makes this app stand out from the rest of the lockscreen apps.

Ripple Lock

ripple lock

This app is for all those who have not yet updated to Android 3.0 but still want its amazing lock screen on their phones. A ripple effect is created upon dragging the circle. To unlock, you need to drag the inside circle to the outside circle.

There is an advertisement banner on the lock screen on the free version of the app; the pro version costs only $1.30.

The app’s built quality is very good and works perfectly on most of the phones. Also, there is a convenient START and STOP button to enable or disable the app.

Lock 2.0

lock 2.0

Lock 2.0 will give you a lock screen very similar to that of the iPhone. To unlock the screen you need to slide the bar from left to right. The app has a good collection of backgrounds and battery skins which can be easily downloaded, giving you the ability to keep changing your lock screen look.

A great feature of this app is that it shows real time battery status while charging your phone. For anyone looking for the iPhone style lock screen, this is the best app available at present.

WP7 Lock

WP7 Lock

WP7 Lock is currently available for free as a lite version. Customization features are not yet available in the app, but the app works fine and brings to your Android a lock screen very similar to that available on phones running Windows Phone 7. It shows the message and email count, and also the number of missed calls (if any).

3D Koi Pond Live Screensaver

3D Koi Pond

This is a free app which allows you to transform your boring lockscreen to something really amazing. As with others, it looks very much like the iPhone lockscreen.

The lockscreen features a live wallpaper (Yes!! It even works on the phones not supporting live wallpapers such as the HTC Wildfire.) You can tap on the screen to scare away the fish, or drag the leaves anywhere in the pond.

The fish are smart and alive. Touch them and they will flee; double-click screen, and food is dropped in. If you long press somewhere, the fish will gather together around your finger.

This is a very good looking lockscreen and amongst the very few featuring live wallpaper.

Sky Lock Screen

sky lock

This is a very simple lockscreen: to unlock the screen you need to slide the bar from left to right. (Yet another that apes the iPhone style). The application has four sky-themed backgrounds from you can choose.

This app is available in the Android Market for $1.19. It does not make sense to pay for this app as there are other apps which can do exactly the same and are available in the market for free. However, if you really like it, the developer has other lock screens in the same style, but with different images.

LockMenu

LockMenu

This app is similar to WidgetLocker, using custom sliders. You can set each of the sliders to perform a specified function. The app is currently available for free, but has an advertisement banner at the bottom of the lockscreen.

Screen Suite

screen suite

This is a very well-built lock screen replacement app. Yes, it has an iPhone style unlock slide bar, but it puts an Android twist on it. It also includes a contact card in case you lost your phone.

This app gives you three lock screens; one displays owner information, the second displays the date and time, and the third shows the battery level. You have an option to choose between iPhone and Android Bot style slider.

Overall, a very nice app and definitely worth the money.

GOTO Lockscreen

GOTO Lockscreen

This lockscreen has a very different design and definitely stands out from the others. The lockscreen slider has four icons: Messaging, Call Log, Gmail, and Unlock.  When you move the slider arrow over an icon, you get a preview; when you release the arrow you are taken directly to the app.

The lockscreen also displays the number of new SMS messages over the text message icon and unread email over the Gmail inbox icon.

The app works flawlessly and is my personal favorite.

Conclusion

At present GOTO Lockscreen is the best lockscreen replacement app available. It has a very efficient design and a good build quality. Screen Suite and WidgetLocker Lockscreen are also very good lockscreen replacement apps and definitely worth a try.

the stock digital time and date on the android lock screen just sucks!

the best way would be to hack a rom and put an analog clock and calendar when the device is resumed from standby. but, of course, this is another demand and requirement, especially for critical users like myself.

WidgetLocker lockscreen is the best ever. “Unless you wanna copy the Iphone, which would be such a shame…”

Wow, I can’t imagine why people actually create stuff like these to imitate the iOS lock screen. If you really want the iPhone lockscreen because of its elegance and simplicity, just buy an iOS device.
