It’s Customization Month on Android.Appstorm! Throughout March, we plan to share with you all our tips, tricks, apps and resources to help you improve your phone or tablet experience and make them suit your style.

When it comes to customizing your Android home screen, choice is more than abundant. All you need to do is think of what you want, and there’s a good chance it already exists somewhere in the bylanes of the official Play store or in a developer forum somewhere. And for things that are too specific for a readymade solution, there are DIY apps that will let you build your home screen widget from scratch.

Ultimate Custom Clock Widget– or UCCW as it is popularly known — is one such app. With more options than you can shake a stick at, UCCW lets you build your own custom homescreen widgets pretty much the way you like. And although there is a whole community of enthusiastic modders who spend hours fine-tuning their UCCW creations and making them available to anyone to download, there is something to be said for the satisfaction of creating one of your own.

That widgets are one of Android’s most loved features is no secret. They are clearly one of the platform’s biggest assets and a staple on pretty much every home screen. Although most versions of Android come with a decent set of widgets built in, the real power of the widget comes to the fore with custom widgets available in the thousands on the Play Store.

Unfortunately, I’ve found myself wanting for a decent clock widget that did everything I needed it to do. A search that has seen me experiment with tons of options on the Play Store, including the excellent Minimalistic Text widget that I wrote about a while back and have been using since. As things go in the Android world, the app found its biggest new rival in my books last week with the Ultimate Custom Clock Widget – or UCCW as it is commonly called in the XDA Developer circles.

doubleTwist is most definitely not a newcomer to the Android app scene, with their media playback app doubleTwist Player still resting comfortably in the Top Android Apps chart. (It’s also old enough to have been reviewed twice here at Android.AppStorm.) But their latest app fills a gap that most people didn’t even know existed: the need for a beautiful alarm clock.

“What time is it?” A simple question, right? If someone asked you the time, what would you look at? I’m sure that most of you have a watch, but if you are here reading you probably look at your smartphone more often. Like most of our possessions we want to customize it and make it beautiful – so why not make the time and weather more pleasing to your eyes?

There’s no shortage of clock and calendar widgets in the Android Market. You can find everything from the super-sleek MIUI clocks to the highly functional Simi Clock Widget and a whole bunch of them that come with launchers and widget sets. But in my experience though, not one of those fits my requirements to a T. There is always some customization I have to have, but is not possible with the widget I choose.

There were no bounds to my happiness last week then, when I finally bumped into one that was so customizable, I’m now lost for ideas on what to do with it! The widget is called Minimalistic Text, and I’m going to take this opportunity to introduce you to the basic concept behind it, discuss the interface and try and walk through the creation of my own customized home screen clock widget.
