A few weeks ago, I reviewed the iPad version of USA Today on our sister site iPad.Appstorm, stating that the latest version of the app was really well designed, feature-rich, and user-friendly. I also made mention of the fact that I don’t use too many news apps, instead opting for a news organization’s Twitter feed or the like. However, I use more news/feed apps on my Nexus 7 than on my iPad — Press, anyone? — and USA Today has a brand new app for Android that’s fantastic.
The Android operating system is scattered with news apps. There seems to be hundreds to choose from and most times, we don’t really know which one is the best for our needs. Last month at Android.Appstorm, we looked at the 40 Best News Apps For Tablets and covered a wide range of news genres. Today, we’ll be looking at News, a holo-designed client for Google News.
News will definitely catch your eye. Whether because of its desirable features or its appealing UI, it has the potential to become the only news apps you’ll ever need again.
Nowadays, the majority of us have moved away from the traditional newspaper and started using the internet to get updated on the latest happenings in politics, business, entertainment and other fields. Our current generation would rather read an electronic copy than the paper, but a phone’s screen is too small, therefore anyone who has a tablet prefers using that for their daily dose of news.
In this roundup, I’ll cover my favorite news apps which are optimized for Android tablets. These are distributed into five different topics: General News, Regional News, Tech, Lifestyle, and News Aggregators.
Maps. We all use them at some point, and a lot of us do so on a device connected to Google’s own mapping service. Just a week before Apple is widely expected to unveil their own mapping service for iOS, Google held a small event to show off developments in Google Maps including some exciting news for those that like to view the world in 3D.
In addition to 3D, Google Maps is getting a bit of a UI update, as well as the ability to access maps while offline! Let’s take a look at what Google had to show off.

If there’s one genre of app that continues to be massively popular in the Google Play Store, it is the humble news app. If you want to stay up to date with the latest news- whether it be national, international, technology, topical, sports or even celebrity gossip(!) there are dozens of apps out there to help you do so on your mobile Android device.
We thought it would be a rather cracking idea to round some of the better news apps for your perusal. This has been split up into 5 sections: Titles, this includes newspapers, TV stations and specialist news sources. Then there’s a section on dedicated Technology and Science news apps. Sports news is very important to a wide range of people so there’s a small section for apps that specialise in top sports news apps. There is also a section especially for news aggregators; hugely popular in the Google Play Store these are usually highly customisable apps that collate your favourite sources into one handy and readable format. Finally, if you have a sense of humour, I’m sure you’ll appreciate our small section on humour and news parody apps.

Put simply: Bacon Reader is a great app for browsing Reddit.
Its well-designed interface is what really sets it apart from the other Reddit apps for Android. The attention to detail is astounding, and welcomed on an app I use so much. The level of thought put into the app has allowed it to make browsing Reddit a much nicer experience than on the reddit.com site itself!
The analytics company comScore Inc keeps track of many aspects of digital technologies, such as the sales and market shares of TVs, broadband packages, tablets, and… smartphones! Here is a little before-and-after of smartphone OS market share and manufacturer popularity from May to October this year. How did Android do?

Back when I had an iPad, one of my favorite features was an app called Flipboard, which displays your RSS feeds in a great-looking newspaper style. It’s a really beautiful app and one of the only ones I actually miss now that I am using the Galaxy Tab. A few days ago, Google Currents launched in the Android Market, claiming to be a fast, clean way to read publications on your tablet and phone. Curiosity (and hope) got to me and I downloaded the app. Let’s see what I found. (more…)
If you follow a handful of websites regularly and you have heard of RSS feeds, chances are that you use the Google Reader service to stay on top of all the new articles posted every day. Google Reader offers a great collection of applications for Android, from the official Google Reader app, which is quite limited in its functions, to a slew of third party software.
Two of these alternatives, namely NewsRob Pro and gReader Pro, are aimed at the Reader power users. Being a power user myself, I have tried the two extensively and decided to share with you my findings.
